Online Desk : BNP Standing committee members have exchanged Eid greetings with party Chairpersons Khaleda Zia. Six members of the BNP policymaking body including Jamiruddin Sircar, Mirza Abbas, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan and Selima Rahman, entered the BNP chief’s Gulshan residence around 8:30pm on Thursday. They inquired about Khaleda’s health condition alongside exchanging Eid greetings with her during their nearly one and a half hours meeting. Later, talking to reporters, Jamiruddin Sircar, said, “It was a courtesy meeting on the occasion of Eid. There was no political discussion in the meeting. We exchanged greetings with her and asked how she was doing.” He said Khaleda greeted the countrymen through them on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. Asked about Khaleda Zia’s physical condition, Sircar, also a former speaker, said they did not see much improvement in her condition. He said the BNP chief needs treatment in an advanced centre abroad as advised by the doctors. Khaleda, 78, has long been suffering from various ailments, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, kidney, lung, heart and eye problems. Since her conditional release in 2020, the BNP chief has been receiving treatment at the hospital under a medical board headed by cardiologist Profsessor Dr Shahabuddin Talukder. BNP standing committee members used to meet Khaleda on the occasion of two Eids every year since she was released from jail on conditions in 2020. Khaleda was sent to the Old Dhaka Central Jail as a lower court sentenced her to five years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8, 2018. Later, she was found guilty in another corruption case the same year. Amid the coronavirus outbreak, the government temporarily freed Khaleda Zia from jail through an executive order suspending her sentence on March 25, 2020, with conditions that she will stay in her Gulshan house and will not leave the country.
