Online Desk: At least 30 people were injured in a clash between two rival groups of Gopalganj Motor Workers’ Union over establishing supremacy and collecting toll from buses plying long routes in Sadar upazila of Gopalganj district on Wednesday evening. The incident took place at around 5.30 pm in Fakirkandi Hajibari area of the district town.
According to locals, there had been a long term enmity between Gopalganj Motor Workers’ Union president Bulbul Islam and former president Jasu Sheikh over several issues. Regarding the enmity, some workers of Jasu Sheikh group attacked Bulbul Islam’s group members in the evening.
At one stage, the two groups equipped with wooden sticks and sharp weapons attacked each others, leaving at least 30 workers from both sides injured. At that time, they also vandalized several houses and shops. Of the injured, eight were admitted to Gopalganj General Hospital while the rest given first aid at different private clinics.
Goaplganj Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Md Jabed Masum said being informed, police rushed there and brought the situation under control by firing tear-gas canisters and rubber bullets to disperse the clashing groups. “Law enforcers have been deployed in the area to avert any further incident and police detained eight persons in this connection,” the OC added.
