Nine dengue patients die, record 2,292 patients hospitalised in a day

Online Desk: A total of nine dengue patients died and 2,292 were admitted to different hospitals, the highest number of hospitalisation in a day from the mosquito-borne disease this year, in the 24 hours till Sunday morning. Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said with nine deaths, the fatalities from the viral fever rose to 176 while 281 died last year.

Among the new patients, 1,064 were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka and the rest outside it, according to DGHS. A total of 7,175 dengue patients, including 4,149 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at hospitals across the country. So far, the DGHS has recorded 32,977 dengue cases and 25,626 recoveries this year.

The country logged 281 dengue deaths in 2022 – the highest on record after 179 deaths recorded in 2019. Also, it recorded 62,423 dengue cases and 61,971 recoveries last year. DGHS has recently issued comprehensive instructions on prevention of dengue infection as the mosquito-borne tropical disease has increased sharply in the current year.

According to the DGHS data, dengue infection has increased five times in the first five months of this year compared to the same period of the last year. Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness that occurs in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Outbreaks of the disease are usually seasonal, peaking during and after the rainy season.
