Online Desk: Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus has paid the National Revenue Board (NBR) Tk 12.46 crore in gift tax on his donation of Tk 76.73 crore to Muhammad Yunus Trust. On behalf of Professor Yunus, Md Ruhul Amin Sarker on Tuesday paid the amount.

Ruhul Amin also sent a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Taxes, Tax Zone-14 of the NBR. In his letter, he mentioned that the Tax Zone concerned was sent a letter regarding the payment of gift tax.

In the context of the notice, taxpayer Dr Yunus submitted an appeal to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. But, the Appellate Division on Sunday passed an order upholding a High Court verdict asking Dr Yunus to pay Tk 12,46,72,608 in gift tax which he learnt from news media.

According to the order, Dr Yunus paid Tk 12,46,72,608 in gift tax through a pay order to Southeast Bank on Tuesday (July 25). In this regard, Md Ruhul Amin Sarker said the gift tax was paid as per the High Court order. At the same time, the Tax Zone concerned was sent a letter requesting for acknowledgement of the money.
