Online Desk: Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq today said they may be compelled to impose a ban on political programmes if those result in public suffering. He said this in response to a question from reporters after visiting the security arrangements of Lalbagh Hosseini Dalan in Dhaka on the occasion of the holy Ashura and Tajiya procession scheduled for July 28.

“I will tell all political parties to hold rallies without causing sufferings to people. Maybe, the time will come in the future when people will get fed up and we may be forced to ban these programmes,” the DMP boss said.

“We have received applications from nine parties, including Awami League and BNP, for rallies. We will review those applications and allow some parties [to hold programmes]. Those who will get permission, it is their democratic right to hold rallies. But it is the responsibility and duty of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police to ensure the safety of the people.”

The political parties should consider issues like holding huge public meetings on working days keeping millions of people stranded on the streets, the DMP chief said. “They [political parties] should hold programmes on weekends instead of workdays in the future,” he added.
