AL, BNP and police clash leaves over 100 injured in Habiganj

Online Desk: More than 100 people were injured between a clash that erupted between the supporters of ruling Awami League (AL) and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Habiganj town on Sunday. The clash broke out between the two parties from about 5.00pm to 7.00pm in Shayestanagar area of the town. Supporters of the both parties chase and counter chased one another and hurled brick bat during the clash.

Witnesses said AL arranged a protest rally and procession at Shayestanagar Mor in the afternoon. Leaders and activists of the party gathered there to join the protest. They then brought out a procession from there and supporters of AL and BNP locked into altercation when the procession reached in front of BNP office. At one stage of the altercation they engaged in clash.

Being informed, police rushed there. A tripartite clash was begun when police chased the supporters of BNP. Police fired tear gas shell to bring the situation under control. More than 100 supporters of the both parties injured in the clash. Critically injured people were admitted to Habiganj Hospital.

About the clash, Habiganj AL general secretary advocate Md. Alamgir Chowdhury said, “We held a peaceful rally which followed by a procession. The clash broke out when BNP leaders and activists threw brick bats at us. Many leaders and activists of the party were injured in the attack.”

Habiganj BNP joint convener GK Gous said, “Leaders and activists of AL carrying sticks attacked our office suddenly from a procession and vandalised it. They also attacked my house. Police joined with them in the clash.”

Many leaders and activists, including municipality councillor Shafiqur Rahman Situ, were injured in the attack, he added. Habiganj Sadar Police Station inspector Badiuzzaman said the situation in the town is under control now.
