Police-BNP clash leaves 30 injured in Ctg, 20 detained

The Daily Morning Voice Online Desk: At least 30 people were injured in clash between police and the supporters of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Kazi Deuri area of Chattogram city on Monday. According to witnesses, leaders and activists of Chattogram city BNP gathered in a rally in front of Nasimon Bhaban in the area to protest the government’s power price hike plan.

At about 3.30pm, supporters of Judo Dal and Swecchasebak Dal in procession were on way to their party office, police obstructed them which led to altercations. At one stage of the altercations, BNP supporters started threw brickchips at police. Later, police fired blank shots to bring the situation under control. Supporters of BNP vandalized several vehicles on road and torched a motorcycle of police during the clash.

Chattogram Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner (South) Mostafizur Rahman told reporters that the BNP leaders and workers started throwing bricks at police without any reason. They torched a vehicle of police and several policemen were injured in the clash, he added. Twenty BNP leaders and workers have been detained from the spot, said the police official. About the clash, Chattogram BNP member secretary Abul Hashem said, “BNP supporters didn’t attacked police. It is police who chased our party supporters. They (police) fired blank shots and at least 20 leaders and activists injured in the clash.”
