Maj Hafiz gets bail in sabotage case, no bar to release

Online Desk: A court in Dhaka on Sunday granted bail to BNP vice-chairman Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, who was sentenced in jail for 21-months in a sabotage case.

Now, there is no legal bar for him to walk out of jail, said Hafiz’s lawyers.

On Sunday morning, Maj Hafiz Uddin’s lawyer submitted a bail petition before the court of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Sessions Judge As-Sams Jaglul Hossain with a condition to file an appeal. After, holding hearing, the court accepted the appeal and granted his bail.

Earlier on March 5, Maj Hafiz surrendered before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury with an appeal. But the court sent him jail rejecting the bail after hearing.

On December 14, Major Hafiz went to India for his knee treatment. When he was in India, he was jailed for 21 months in the case. Besides, he was fined Tk 5,000 and in default, he will have to serve one month more in jail.

Six other BNP men have also been jailed in the case. They were Major (Retd) Md Hanif, MA Awal Khan, Md Russell, Moinul Islam, Babul Hossain Babu, and Alamgir Biswas Raju.

Among them, Maj (Retd) Md Hanif has been jailed for 21 months while the rest have been sentenced to 42 months of imprisonment and fined Tk 5,000 each.
