Online Desk:  Detective Branch (DB) of Police has arrested a man in connection with the killing of a security guard of an ATM booth of Modhumoti Bank in Shahjadpur area of the capital April 10, a day before Eid-ul-Fitr.

Ariful Islam, 27, was held during a raid in Kalachandpur area of Gulshan in the city.

Harun-Or-Rashid, chief of detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told this at a press briefing at the DMP media centre in the capital on Monday.

The official said the accused Ariful had a business of supplying construction materials two to three years ago.But he incurred huge losses and was burdened with a debt of around Tk 15 lakh.

As people were looking for him for payment, Ariful went into hiding fearing the consequences.

Later, Ariful planned to rob the ATM booth to pay the off the debt, the DB official said, adding the arrestee selected the Shahjadpur ATM booth as he thought few customers used it. So it would be easy for him to break it and take the cash.

To execute his plan Ariful watched videos of similar crimes on YouTube.

On April 10, the Ariful wearing the jersey of the Bangladesh cricket team entered the booth around 5:15am and attempt to break the ATM but the security guard Hasan Mahmud, 55, tried to prevent him for the doing that.

He stabbed the guard, leaving him dead on the spot and the next morning police recovered the body.

Ariful tried 10 to 12 minutes to break open the ATM but failed to take out the cash. Later, he left the booth and immediately.

The accused in primary interrogation confessed his involvement in killing the guard, the DB chief said.
