The animal waste produced during Eid-ul-Azha will be cleared from the streets within six hours, announced Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam. He made the remarks at a ceremony marking the addition of 32 dump trucks and eight compactors for waste management to the DNCC fleet at the capital’s Gabtoli on Wednesday. Last year, the waste from Eid sacrifices was removed from the streets within eight hours, the mayor said. This time it will be even quicker. “This time our target is to remove the sacrifice waste within six hours,” he said. The addition of the 40 new trucks will speed up the process.
“The eight modern compactor trucks we added are capable of removing 10 times more waste than normal trucks. By compacting trash, these trucks can carry a lot of waste at once.” Atiqul said that all preparations had been made to remove the sacrifice waste. “Over 10,000 workers will be on duty. Some 1.04 million polythene bags are being distributed. Sufficient quantities of bleaching powder, Savlon, baskets and phenyl have been provided. Councillors and DNCC staff will work in the field around the clock.”
He urged city residents not to throw garbage away wherever it was convenient. “I request the public not to throw away sacrificial waste everywhere. Leave it in a designated place. If we get the public’s cooperation, as we did last time, we will remove the sacrificial waste in the six hours we’ve targeted.”
