State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief, Md Mohibur Rahman, announced that India and China have agreed to collaborate on the Teesta project.

The announcement was made following an inter-ministerial meeting held at the Secretariat on Sunday to address the flood situation in various parts of the country.

Rahman highlighted the natural flow of water from upstream regions and the need for innovative solutions to mitigate annual flooding. He emphasized the importance of efficient water drainage to the Bay of Bengal and mentioned that dredging is a critical component of the project, with the Teesta Barrage being a significant element.

The Prime Minister is actively engaged in this initiative and will be visiting China. Both India and China have expressed their willingness to assist with the Teesta project.

Rahman clarified that while there is no formal agreement yet, China has conducted a feasibility study, and Bangladesh is moving forward with the project. Both India and China are interested in providing funding.

The Prime Minister’s stance is clear: the country will accept financial support from any nation that offers the best terms for Bangladesh’s needs and benefits. The focus is on the nation’s interest rather than thesource of the funds, which is deemed the highest form of patriotism.
