Online Desk : A former teacher of BRAC University has become the subject of forced disappearance after he was picked by law enforcers from his residence at Uttara in Dhaka after Saturday midnight. Nafisa, younger sister of teacher Asif Mahtab, alleged that his brother was forcibly and inhumanely picked by a group of plain-clothed detective branch personnel from their Uttara residence after 1:00am on Saturday (July 28).
In the meantime, Asif Mahtab’s parents went to the Detective Branch (DB) office at Minto Road in the capital to know whether their son was still alive. On the other hand, the DB of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), on Sunday said they took BRAC University teacher Asif Mahtab into their custody. Addressing a press conference at the DB’s Minto Road office on Sunday (July 28), DMP’s additional commissioner Mohammad Harun-ar-Rashid admitted about arresting Asif Mahtab. Meanwhile, Shahabur Rahman, father of Asif Mahtab, who was anxiously waiting at Minto Road to know whereabout of his son, said, “We don’t know why my son had been picked up from my house by a group of people introducing them as DB personnel.
“I have come here at Minto Road to know about my son’s condition, but nobody is talking to me here. I was even told from inside the DB office here that DB would have informed me if they had brought my son here. In such a situation, we have become highly worried. We want know about Asif Mahmud. Is he alive? If he is alive, how is he now,” Asif’s father broke down into tears saying those. Father Shahbur Rahman said, “My son has come to Bangladesh several days ago with a foreign degree from abroad. He advocates for common people, he talks about the rights of common students. Asif used to say that they had full confidence in police.”
