Online Desk : Police have arrested six individuals reportedly for raping a flood affected handicapped woman at Titas upazila in Cumilla district on Friday afternoon. The incident took place at Daskandi Bazaar in the upazila on Wednesday evening when the accused lured the victim, 35, with promise of giving relief aid.
The arrested are Ali Noor, 45, of Porakandi village; CNG Babu, 40, of Chak Bari; CNG driver Idon, 25, of Chak Bari, Haripur; Arif, 30, of Haripur; Noor Mohammad, 25, of Das Kandi Chak Bari; and Bidyut Mazumder, 35, of the same village. According to witnesses, local youth, including student volunteers, apprehended the accused and tied them to a tree before handing them over to police. The suspects were subjected to mob justice before the police arrived.
According to local sources, the incident took place on Wednesday afternoon when the victim went to Daskandi Bazar hoping to receive relief materials. At that time, one of the accused, known as CNG Babu, allegedly tricked her into waiting at a shop under the pretense of giving her aid. Later, the accused reportedly gathered and took turns raping the woman. The crime came to light when a student coordinator was informed of the incident. The accused were then called in the bazar on Friday morning, where they reportedly confessed to their crime.
Titas Police Station officer-in-charge Kazi Nazmul Haque confirmed the arrests, adding that the victim was rescued and sent for a medical check-up. A case is currently being processed to be filed and legal actions will be taken further.
