Online Desk  :   A total of six people from two families, including a woman and her two children, died in landslides due to the heavy rainfall in Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila and in Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila early Friday. In Sadar upazila: A woman named Akhi Moni, 26, wife of Mizan of Dikkul area under Jhilongjha union in Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila, and her two daughters — Miha Jannat Naima and Latifa Islam died in the landslide.

According to a neighbor, they heard a loud sound in the direction of Mizan’s house at around 2AM. They promptly reached the spot and rescued Mizan alive but found his wife and daughters trapped under the debris. Later, the fire service men recovered the bodies of Akhi Moni and her daughters. Mizanul Karim Sikder, a local union parishad member, said due to continuous rainfall that began on Thursday afternoon, many areas in Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila have been flooded. He said Mizan’s house was located at the base of a hill. The heavy rain had softened the soil which triggered the landslide at midnight. Mizanul said the authorities had earlier warned about the possible landslides but some people did not move to safe place.

In Ukhiya upazila: Three members of the same family died during a landslide in a Rohingya camp Block-E.  A source in the camp said three houses were destroyed in the landslide, left Abdur Rahim, 31, son of Kabir Ahmed and his two sons Abdul Hafez,10, and Abdul Washed, 8, dead. Ataul Gani Osmani, Additional District Magistrate of Cox’s Bazar, said a total of six people have died due to landslides in the district. Among them, three are Bangladeshis and three are Rohingyas. Meanwhile, the local meteorologist office has recorded 378MM of rainfall in the last 24 hours till 6am on Friday, which is highest rainfall in current situation.
