Online Desk : Clashes have broken out between the students of Dr Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, and Kabi Nazrul Government College in Dhaka’s Matuail. Several students have been severely injured after violence sparked in front of Mollah College around noon on Monday. A siege programme was announced on Sunday following the death of Mollah College student Abhijit at Dhaka National Medical College. The programme, dubbed “Super Sunday”, resulted in widespread vandalism at Dhaka National Medical and Suhrawardy College nearby by students of Mollah College and other colleges.
Students at Nazrul College were sitting for their first-year undergraduate exams at the Suhrawardy College centre. The exam was suspended partway through for security reasons amid the unrest. In protest of the attacks and looting, students at Suhrawardy College and Nazrul College announced a “Mega Monday” protest programme. As part of the programme, students from different departments at Suhrawardy College led separate marches that ended at the campus courtyard. They then marched together to Nazrul College.
When the Nazrul College principal asked for calm over the megaphone, the students of the two colleges disregarded him. They then led a protest march towards Mollah College in Jatrabari, where they launched an attack. A clash then began with students of Mollah College. Video shared on social media showed several people falling to the ground after being beaten badly amid the violence. Glass and structures in front of Mollah College were also damaged.
VANDALISM AT ST GREGORY : Old Dhaka’s St Gregory School and College has also been attacked amid allegations that students from the institution took part in the vandalism and looting at Suhrawardy College on Sunday afternoon. The attack on St Gregory occurred around 6pm on Sunday, according to Saiful Islam, chief of Sutrapur Police Station. However, he did not comment on who the perpetrators of the vandalism were. Several witnesses claimed the attack was carried out by students of Suhrawardy College.
Nazmul Islam, a student at St Gregory, said: “Suddenly, a group of young men came and attacked our college. Before we knew what was happening, they had broken windows, chairs, and tables in the college buildings.” “They vandalised nearly 30-40 rooms, including classrooms, the principal’s room, and teachers room. They even set a fire on the second floor of the college.” The St Gregory School authorities condemned the attack in a press release, saying: “A group of 30-35 unruly youths from outside broke through the security cordon at St. Gregory High School and College and carried out criminal attacks, vandalism and looting. During the attack, they severely beat security guards Nazmul Haque and Sumon Gomez.” “They were rescued and admitted to Salimullah Medical College in serious condition. St Gregory High School and College strongly condemns and protests this criminal attack.”
