Online Desk  :  Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhtar has called for immediate measures to address illegal fishing, particularly during the restricted fishing period, urging authorities to form a dedicated committee to combat the issue effectively. At a workshop titled ‘Revised Determination of Fishing Ban Period in the Bay of Bengal’, the adviser highlighted the increasing problem of foreign fishermen, particularly from India, encroaching into Bangladeshi waters during the closed season. She underscored the need for a coordinated approach involving the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, the Fisheries Department, the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), the Coast Guard, the Naval Police, and the Navy to curb illegal activities and protect marine resources. Farida Akhtar stressed the importance of basing fishing restrictions on scientific research, specifically on the breeding cycles of key species such as hilsa. She urged the BFRI to intensify research efforts and ensure public awareness about sustainable fishing practices.

“Hilsa is not just a source of protein; it is a symbol of our natural heritage. Protecting its breeding cycles and ensuring its growth are crucial for future generations,” she stated. The adviser emphasized that preserving fish stocks would require the collective effort of fishermen, policymakers, and law enforcement agencies. Despite an increase in fish production, she noted that the high prices of hilsa remain a challenge, driven by factors such as harvesting methods, distribution inefficiencies, and inadequate preservation. Addressing these issues, she said, would help make fish more affordable for the population while maintaining fair profits for fishermen.

On illegal fishing gear, Farida Akhtar warned that banning fishing during specific periods would remain ineffective unless unregulated fishing nets were brought under control. She praised ongoing raids against illegal net manufacturers and urged the Ministry of Industry to withhold licenses for such operations. Dr. Mohammad Abdur Rouf, Additional Director General of the Fisheries Department, who chaired the workshop, reiterated the importance of preserving marine biodiversity and called for stricter enforcement of fishing regulations to ensure the sustainable development of the fisheries sector.
