Online Desk  :   The “Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provisions) Act, 2010” has been repealed. Following the approval of the Advisory Council, the President issued an ordinance on Thursday (November 28) to abolish the act. The Advisory Council gave policy-level and final approval to the proposal on November 20 for issuing the “Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provisions) (Repeal) Ordinance, 2024.” Although the 2010 law has been repealed, contracts made under it will remain valid.

The law, enacted during the tenure of the Awami League government, has faced allegations of facilitating embezzlement through various activities. After the fall of the Awami League government, the interim government suspended the act. At the time of the ordinance’s approval, the Cabinet Division stated, “Under Section 6 of the Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provisions) Act, 2010, the execution of power generation agreements has created a strong negative perception among the public regarding widespread corruption and mismanagement in Bangladesh’s electricity sector, both nationally and internationally.” On November 14, the High Court declared Sections 6(2) and 9 of the “Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provisions) Act, 2010” illegal.
