Online Desk : A group of workers in Gazipur protested and blocked a road again on Monday, demanding a salary increase. The workers, employed at Irish Fashion Limited, a garment factory in the Zirani area of Gazipur city, blocked the Chandra-Nabinagar road at around 8:30 am for nearly an hour, causing significant traffic disruptions. According to the industrial police and workers, the government’s announced 9% annual salary increase excludes those who have not completed one year of service. Workers at the Irish Fashion Limited factory in Zirani began protesting on Sunday morning, calling for a salary hike. Their protest continued until noon, after which they returned home. On Monday morning, after reporting to work, the workers resumed their protest and gathered on the Chandra-Nabinagar road to block it.
Upon receiving the news, law enforcement personnel arrived at the scene and persuaded the workers to clear the road. Traffic on the road returned to normal by 9:30 am. However, the workers continued their protest inside the factory. Md Iqbal Hossain, a worker at Irish Fashion Limited, stated, “Like other workers, even new employees (with less than a year of service) should receive a salary increase. We do the same work as those who joined earlier, so why shouldn’t we get a salary hike?”
Additional Superintendent of Police Md Khalilur Rahman from Gazipur Industrial Police confirmed, “The workers had blocked the road for a short time, but traffic on the Chandra-Nabinagar road is now normal. Additional law enforcement personnel have been deployed at the site.”
