Online Desk  :  Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police have arrested former Dhaka-7 MP Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin. He was arrested from Dhaka’s Mohammadpur on Monday morning, said Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman, a spokesman for the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. However, he could not provide details about which case and under which police station the ex-lawmaker was arrested. Jalal has been named in several cases including murder cases filed over incidents during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement protests, according to the police.

Sheikh Hasina stepped down as prime minister and fled to India on Aug 5 in the face of a mass uprising. Since the interim government took power, former ministers, state-ministers, top leaders and influential parliamentarians of the fallen Awami League have been arrested. Jalal has been arrested five months after the government changeover. The physician was elected as the MP from the Dhaka-7 constituency in the ninth general election in 2008. In 1991, he had contested the Dhaka-8 seat but lost to the BNP’s Mir Shawkat Ali.

Haji Salim, running as an independent candidate, defeated Jalal in the race for the Dhaka-7 seat in the 2014 election. Jalal was elected general secretary of the Bangladesh Medical Association, or BMA, in 1988, 1997, and 1999. He founded Shadhinota Chikitshak Parishad on Dec 24, 1993. The Awami League selected Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin as a member of its Presidium at the national convention on Dec 24, 2022.
