Online Desk  :  Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed has said that economic reforms are urgently needed at this moment. According to him, if procedural laws and regulations are properly utilised, implementing these reforms will not be difficult. He made these remarks on Sunday (January 26) during a programme held at the National Board of Revenue (NBR) conference room in observance of International Customs Day. He emphasised that if procedural laws are used correctly, the reform process will not be challenging.

Following changes in political power, several commissions have been formed for reforms in the Election Commission, police, and other institutions. However, no commission has been formed for economic reforms. Economists have called for the formation of such a commission. Regarding economic reforms, the adviser said, “We are talking a lot about reforms. I believe that the most urgent reform right now is economic reform. If we cannot carry out this reform, it will be difficult, but it can also be easy. It is difficult because there are many fundamental laws and regulations. However, if we can apply the procedural laws properly, efficiently, and transparently, these reforms will not be very difficult. We need to understand this. The system is in place, but we are not using it correctly.”

He further mentioned that the country is on the right path in terms of revenue collection and management, saying, “We are making reasonable progress. However, we are lagging behind in terms of technological and procedural aspects. We need to enter the modern age.” During the event, 16 officials from the National Board of Revenue (NBR) were awarded Certificates of Merit in recognition of their exceptional contributions to the organization.
