Online Desk : Railway running staff decided to call off their indefinite work abstention early today (Jan 29). The strike was withdrawn after the union received assurances that their demands would be met. Mojibur Rahman, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Railway Running Staff and Sramik Karmachari Union, announced the decision at around 2:45 AM following a meeting at the railway adviser’s residence on Minto Road. His announcement came after Railways Ministry Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan assured them that their demands would be addressed. The meeting was attended by railway running staff leaders, government officials, student leaders, and a BNP representative.
Mojibur stated that the railway adviser had pledged to fulfill the staff’s demands by tomorrow. “We regret the inconvenience caused to the public. I urge all running staff to return to work and resume train operations. The strike is officially withdrawn from this moment,” he said. Bangladesh Railway Director General Afzal Hossain told The Daily Star that train services would resume today according to the existing schedules. After the meeting, Railways Ministry Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan reassured the staff that their concerns would be addressed.
“I will discuss the running staff facilities with the finance adviser, and I am confident that I can resolve this matter responsibly,” he said. He also confirmed that the existing benefits for railway staff would remain unchanged. Earlier, a discussion was held at the adviser’s residence, attended by Railways Ministry Secretary Fahimul Islam, Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal Chief Coordinator Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Convener Hasnat Abdullah, and others.
