Online Desk : The first passenger train has crossed the Jamuna Railway Bridge. The Silk City Express, traveling from Rajshahi to Dhaka, entered the bridge at 11:18 AM on Wednesday. This marks the beginning of passenger train operations on the Jamuna Railway Bridge. Project Director of the Jamuna Railway Bridge Al Fattah Mohammad Masudur Rahman said that the Silk City Express is the first train to travel across the newly constructed bridge, located to the north of the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge. Other trains will follow according to their schedule in the coming days.
The 4.8 kilometer-long Jamuna Railway Bridge has two tracks, but initially, trains will run on only one track in both directions. A formal inauguration program will take place on February 18. After that train services will commence on both tracks. The Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge was opened in 1998, providing rail and road connectivity between Dhaka and the north-western regions of Bangladesh. However, a crack was discovered in the bridge in 2008, leading to a reduction in the speed limit for trains. To address this issue, Jamuna Railway Bridge was constructed 300 meters away from the original bridge.
