Online Desk : Law Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul on Sunday said the law ministry has recommended the withdrawal of 7,184 politically motivated cases filed during the tenure of the previous “fascist” government. “Sometimes, cases are submitted that aren’t genuinely politically motivated. Many attempt to include names through various means. However, officials at both the law and home ministries are carefully scrutinising these matters. I want to assure you that they are working with utmost sincerity,” he said at a press conference held at the ministry’s conference room.
Speaking about model Meghna’s case, Dr Nazrul said, “There are certain allegations against her that are under investigation. However, the manner of her arrest was improper. The home ministry will take appropriate steps after verification.” He also addressed the Bangladesh Bank cyber heist, revealing that a review committee has been formed to investigate the incident, which he is heading. The committee includes the central bank governor and other officials. “There was an attempt to loot $2 billion from the bank — essentially a plan to plunder Bangladesh,” Dr Nazrul said, adding that had it succeeded, the country could have faced a famine.
He further alleged that the previous government deliberately delayed the investigation. “The CID did investigate the matter, but there was a clear directive to exclude the names of Bangladesh Bank officials involved from the report,” he claimed. “I have inquired about the actions taken against those initially named in the CID report, and instructions have now been issued for appropriate follow-up,” he added.
