Flood may hit Sherpur, river crosses 106cm above danger level

Online Desk  : The water level of rivers in Sherpur district has risen rapidly following incessant heavy rains in Meghalaya and Assam and rains in the district for the last four days. The Chellakhali river’s water level has already crossed the danger level of 106 centimeters, according to the last report of the Water Development Board at 10AM on Tuesday.

The water level was 39 centimeters at 10PM on Monday, which decreased slightly overnight. Due to torrential rain since Tuesday morning and heavy rainfall from upstream, the water level has risen again. Some shops have been damaged as the water of Someshwari River has risen and entered the low-lying areas near the under-construction Chapatali Bridge.

According to the Sherpur Water Development Board’s information as of 9AM, the water in the Bhogai River (Nakugaon point) is flowing 379 centimeters below the danger level, while 257 centimeters below the danger level at the Nalitabari Point and 687 centimeters below the danger level at the Old Brahmaputra Point. According to the Department of Disaster Management’s warning, the low-lying areas of the district may be temporarily flooded till May 20, which could cause major damage to public life and the agricultural sector..
