Motorcycles responsible for over 40% of road accident deaths- Road Safety Foundation

Online Desk:  As many as 487 people were killed and 712 injured in 439 road crashes across the country in February this year. It was revealed through a latest report of Road Safety Foundation on Wednesday. It said some 40.24 per cent of the deceased were killed in motorcycle accidents, while 22.17 per cent of them were pedestrians. It said among the dead, 54 were women and 68 children.

Of the total deceased, 196 people died in 183 motorcycle accidents. As many as 108 pedestrians died in these accidents, which is about 22.17 per cent of the total deaths. Besides, sixteen people were dead and seven were injured in nine waterways accidents while at least 14 people were killed and five were injured in 17 railway accidents during the same period.

Road Safety Foundation prepared the report based on information from nine national dailies, seven online news portals and electronic media. Some 72 drivers and their assistants were killed, which is 14.78 per cent of the total deaths. According to its observation and analysis, total 168 accidents occurred on national highways, 177 on regional roads, 61 on rural roads and 29 on urban roads.
