Online Desk: A Dhaka court today granted bail to BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbas in a case filed over amassing illegal wealth of Tk 20.76 crore in July, 2019. Before that, the court accepted the charges brought against the couple after scrutinising the case dockets and other relevant documents.

Judge Md Asaduzzaman of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court granted the bail after they surrendered before it, seeking bail in the case. In the order, the judge said the couple will remain on bail after submitting their passports before the court. The judge fixed April 26 for hearing on charge framing against them in the case.

On December 27 last year, ACC Deputy Director and the investigation officer of the case Nurul Huda submitted the charge sheet against Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbas to the Senior Special Judge’s Court of Dhaka.

According to the charge sheet, Mirza Abbas was a member of parliament, minister and mayor of Dhaka City Corporation from 1991 to 1995. He was the housing and public works minister from 2001 to 2006. He obtained the wealth in the name of Afroza Abbas till August 16, 2007 through bribery and corruption by virtue of being a lawmaker, mayor and minister.

On July 7, 2019, the former assistant director of the ACC Mohammad Salahuddin filed the case with Shahjahanpur Police Station, alleging that Abbas had acquired assets worth Tk 20.76 crore. Later, the couple got bail from the High Court.
