Lalmonirhat border: Bangladeshi shot dead by BSF

Online Desk: A Bangladeshi man was shot dead by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along the border in Lalmonirhat’s Patgram upazila last night. Another was injured after being shot in the leg. The incident took place around 11:30pm yesterday near the main pillar number 864 in the Medical Bridge area of Shamshernagar.

The deceased was identified as Rabiul Islam, 54, of Kalabagan area in Patgram, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police sources said a group of 9-10 Bangladeshis were bringing cattle illegally from Pathantari area in Behar district of West Bengal when the BSF patrolling team of Chungarkhata camp opened fire. After Rabiul and Shahidul Islam, 30, were shot, the group members rescued and brought them to the Bangladesh territory, the sources said.

Later, Rabiul Islam succumbed to his injuries. Sahidul is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Rangpur, the sources added. Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Patgram Police Station Omar Faruk said police recovered the body and sent it to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Director of BGB-61 Teesta Battalion-2 Colonel AM Mahbubul Alam Khan, confirming the incident, said a protest letter has been sent to the BSF.
