Online Desk: A Dhaka court on Wednesday granted bail to BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbas upon their surrender before the court in a graft case filed in July, 2019. Judge Md Monjurul Imam of Dhaka’s Special Judge’s Court-6 passed the order after the couple, accompanied by their lawyer Mohi Uddin Chowdhury, appeared before the court seeking bail in the case.
The lawyer also submitted another petition, seeking an adjournment of charge framing hearing against the accused. The judge then fixed May 21 for next hearing of the case.
According to the charge sheet, Mirza Abbas was a member of parliament, minister and mayor of Dhaka City Corporation from 1991 to 1995. He was the housing and public works minister from 2001 to 2006. He obtained the wealth in Afroza’s name till August 16, 2007 through bribery and corruption by virtue of being a lawmaker, mayor and minister.
On July 7, 2019, the former assistant director of the ACC Mohammad Salahuddin filed the case with Shahjahanpur Police Station, alleging that Abbas had acquired assets worth Tk 20.76 crore. Later, the couple got bail from the High Court.
