Online Desk: The World Press Freedom Day will be observed in Bangladesh and elsewhere today to inform the international community that freedom of the press and freedom of expression are fundamental human rights. The day reminds people that many journalists brave death or face jail to bring daily news to the public.
The United Nations declared May 3 as World Press Freedom Day in 1993. This year’s theme for the day is “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights”, signifying the enabling element of freedom of expression to enjoy and protect all other human rights.
Marking the day, UNESCO will organise a special anniversary event at UN headquarters in New York, marking the 30 years since the UN General Assembly’s decision proclaiming an international day for press freedom.
