Online Desk: The Appellate Division on Thursday upheld the High Court order that dismissed the writ challenging the legality of the process of election of Mohammad Shahabuddin as President of Bangladesh.
The court also fined the writ petitioner Tk 1,00,000. An eight-member Appellate Division bench led by Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order.
Lawyer M A Aziz was fined Tk 1,00,000 as he filed an illogical writ. Attorney general A M Amin Uddin was in the court on behalf of the state.
On March 7, Supreme Court lawyer Advocate MA Aziz Khan filed the writ with the High Court challenging the legality of the process of the election of Mohammad Shahabuddin as President of Bangladesh. The petition also challenged the issuance of the gazette notification that declared Shahabuddin President-elect and sought stay of the operation of the notification.
The High Court on March 15 dismissed the writ. The Election Commission on February 13 declared Shahabuddin President-elect of Bangladesh. Shahabuddin, , also retired judge, was elected unopposed as the candidate nominated by the ruling Awami League.
