Jahangir’s suspension from mayor post not done as per law: HC

Online Desk: The High Court (HC) on Sunday said the process of suspending Jahangir Alam from the Gazipur City Corporation mayor’s post was not done as per law. The HC bench of Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Md Bashir Ullah passed the order after settling a rule issued in this regard, reports UNB.

Barrister Belayet Hossain appeared for Jahangir in the court. Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Md Rasel Chowdhury and Assistant Attorney General MMG Sarwar Payel appeared for the state.

On August 14 last year, Jahangir Alam, who was suspended from the post of Gazipur mayor, filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking reinstatement. The petition challenged the legal validity of his suspension. Barrister Mashiur Rahman filed the petition on behalf of Jahangir.

Later, on August 23, the High Court issued a rule asking why the decision to suspend Jahangir Alam from the post of Gazipur city mayor should not be declared illegal. The hearing on the rule began on March 15. Today, the High Court disposed of the rule and gave the verdict.

Jahangir was expelled from the Awami League on November 25, 2021, for making “derogatory remarks” about the Liberation War and the martyrs. Last year, he was suspended from the post of Gazipur City Corporation mayor. He later filed a writ petition challenging the suspension. On December 17 last year, Awami League announced pardoning Jahangir on the condition that he would not violate the organization’s interests and discipline in the future, as per the decision of the party’s executive committee.

Then, on April 3, the Election Commission announced the election schedule for Gazipur City Corporation. Failing to get AL nomination for mayoral post in Gazipur City Corporation election, Jahangir submitted nomination as an independent candidate. The returning officer rejected Jahangir’s nomination papers on charges of loan default. However, his mother’s nomination was declared valid, and she won the election held on May 25.
