Online Desk: Mahbuba Akter Akhi was admitted to the Central Hospital under Gynaecologist Sangjukta Saha, the Central Hospital authorities claimed today. “We have all the documents. We will give the details on completion of the investigation,” Mamunur Rashid Russell, manager of Central Hospital, told reporters today.

After communicating with Sangjukta’s personal secretary and driver Md Zamir, Akhi along with her husband Yakub Ali Sumon reached the hospital shortly after June 9 midnight, the manager said, adding that Akhi was then admitted to the hospital under Sangjukta.

But Sangjukta had left the hospital earlier around 9:30pm, Mamunur Rashid said. “She did not inform the hospital authorities about her leaving. We came to know about it around 4:00am [on June 10],” he added. Earlier, the hospital authorities postponed today’s press conference on the deaths of Akhi and her newborn, saying they would hold the briefing after their investigation ends.

“Due to legal bindings, we cannot hold the press conference until the investigation is complete. The investigation committee has sought seven more days; we have asked them to complete it in the next four days,” MA Quasem, vice president of the board of directors at Central Hospital, told The Daily Star this morning. “We have been preparing replies to her (Sangjukta’s) false claims,” he added. Eight days after the death of her newborn, Akhi died on Sunday.

On June 14, her husband Yakub Ali Sumon filed a case with Dhanmondi Police Station, bringing allegations of botched C-section and fraud against the doctors concerned and the hospital. Two attending doctors — Shahzadi Mustarshida Sultana and Muna Shaha — were sent to jail by a Dhaka Metropolitan Court on June 15 following a case in this regard. They are among the six physicians and supporting staffers who were sued in the case.

Yesterday, during a press conference at her home in Dhaka, Sangjukta blamed the authorities of Central Hospital for the deaths of Akhi and her newborn. Sangjukta had also said Zamir was not her assistant. After Central Hospital authority’s press briefing today, this newspaper tried to contact Sangjukta, but she did not answer the phone. Zamir’s phone was also found switched off.
