Online Desk: AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, the Awami League-backed mayoral candidate, unofficially won the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) again on Wednesday.
Liton with the Boat electoral symbol got 1,59,797 votes while his nearest contender Jatiya Party’s Md Nazrul Islam (Plough) bagged 9,457 votes in the election. The counting of votes was continued till 8pm. AHM Khairuzzaman Liton has won the mayoral race in the RCC election for the third time.
Earlier in the day, the voting for RCC was held from 8am to 4 pm in the city corporations through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal estimated that voter turnout at Sylhet city polls was around 46 per cent while it was around 52-55 per cent in Rajshahi city election.
Habibul while talking with reporters after the elections at his office also said that both the polls were held without any major untoward incidents. He said polling in the two cities was held amid festivities, and in a free and fair manner.
