Online Desk: Dr Sangjukta Saha today said she could not manage time to renew her registration with Bangladesh Dental and Medical Council in the last 13 years. She said this while talking to reporters at her residence regarding the death of her patient Mahbuba Rahman Akhi and her neonate following an alleged botched Caesarean Section at the Central Hospital in Dhaka recently. “I should have renewed it [registration]. I could not pay attention to the matter due to my busy schedule,” she said.

“I talked to Dr Shahzadi at 11:00pm on that day (June 9) over phone to know whether the patient [Akhi] had reached or not. She informed me that the patient had not arrived yet. After that I had no knowledge about the patient,” she said. Earlier, Sangjukta claimed that she did not know anything about the arrival of Akhi.

About the BMDC disciplinary body’s statement that termed her campaign on social media unethical, she said, “I did it to create awareness. If the administrative body [BMDC] rules so, I will have to rethink it.”

On Friday, BMDC disciplinary committee also sought instruction from its executive body to investigate the role of the doctors in this regard.

On June 18, Akhi died seven days after the death of her newborn following the alleged botched C-section on June 10 at Central Hospital. Following the tragic incident, Sangjukta and the hospital authorities blamed each other for being responsible for the death.
