Online Desk: Bangladesh suffered a 21-run defeat against Sri Lanka in their do-or-die match of the Super Four in the Asia Cup at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday. In replying to 258, the Tigers were all out for 236 in 48.1 overs to stand on the brink of elimination from the tournament.

The men in red and green must now beat India by a good margin at the same venue on Friday next but before that hope for other results to go their way. Pakistan and Sri Lanka both have two points having played one game each, while Bangladesh are winless in two Super Four matches with India the other side in the competition.

Towhid Hridoy top-scored for Bangladesh with 82 off 97 balls, featuring seven fours and a six, but following his departure it was all over for the tourists. Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Naim Sheikh added 29, 28 and 21 runs respectively on the board but that did not enough for victory. Maheesh Theekshana, captain Dasun Shanaka and Matheesha Pathirana bagged three wickets apiece for Sri Lanka.

Earlier on batting first, Sri Lanka posted a challenging total of 257 runs losing nine wickets on the basis of Sadeera Samarawickrama’s quick-fire 93 off 72. Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis and Dasun Shanaka scored 40, 50 and 24 runs respectively for their team.

Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud were the picks of the bowlers from the Bangladesh side who bagged three wickets each. Besides, Shorful Islam got two wickets. Shakib Al Hasan and Nasum Ahmed restricted the run rate conceding 44 and 31 runs respectively despite not getting any wickets.
