Online Desk: Three police personnel have been seriously injured during clashes with the BNP on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Narayanganj’s Araihazar, law enforcers say.

The violence started around 8:30 am on Tuesday in the Panchrukhi area and continued for about an hour, according to Amir Khosru, additional superintendent of Narayanganj police, reports bdnews24.com.

BNP leaders and activists were burning tires on the highway as part of their obstruction programme and had vandalised several vehicles, he said.

“Police on duty in the area went to intervene and three of them were beaten, hacked at, and injured by BNP activists. Once additional police personnel reached the scene, the situation was brought under control.”

“Police used a large number of shotgun shells and threw tear gas to disperse the BNP leaders and activists. At this point, a few other police personnel were injured by brickbats thrown by the BNP activists.”

One of the injured policemen is critically injured and is receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The other two seriously injured in the clash have been admitted to local hospitals, Amir Khosru said.

Three people have been detained from the scene, according to Abir Hossain, senior assistant superintendent of police.
