Online Desk: Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company has disconnected over 11,300 illegal household and other connections in three days in Munshiganj district.
According to officials, a team of Titas Gas – headed by its managing director Md. Haronur Rashid Mullah – conducted a drive against the illegal connections in different areas of Munshiganj on Monday, Thursday and Saturday.
The areas include Moddho Baushia, Baktarkandi, Bhaberchar, Alipura Vitikandi, Notun Charchashi, Puran Baushia, Bhaber Char College Road, and Gazaria.
The length of the disconnected lines is about 34 km where the illegal connection holders include 11,300 household users, three casting factories, five restaurants and 59 tea stalls.
Each of the connections was snapped permanently from the source point, said Titas Gas.
Titas Gas officials informed that the drive against illegal connections was conducted through mobile court by executive magistrates from Munshiganj district administration.
Titas Gas official sources also said the company has 28.78 lakh consumers across its operating areas which include Dhaka, Gazipur, Munshiganj, Narayanganj, Manikganj, Mymensingh, Kishorganj and adjoining districts.
It supplies about 55 percent of the total gas produced in the country to the consumers. But apart from its legal connection holders, it has a huge number of illegal connection holders.
“The number will be more than 3 lakh and most of the illegal connections are in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur, Munshiganj and Manikganj,” said a top official of Titas Gas.
He also alleged that these illegal connections holders have been getting gas supply with the help of a section of unscrupulous officers and employees of Titas Gas Company in connivance with the local representatives. As a result, despite repeated drives, such illegal connections have not stopped permanently, he added.
