Online Desk  :   The interim government has banned the Awami League’s student-wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). “If they (BCL) try to hold any meeting or bring out any procession, steps will be taken against them,” said Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Moynul Islam on Saturday (October 26). He was speaking at a rally in Rangpur early Saturday afternoon. The rally was organised at Rangpur Police Lines School and College Auditorium on the occasion of the sixth founding anniversary of Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RMP).

The police chief said, “Chhatra League will no more be able to hold meetings or bring out processions. They will not be allowed to do so. Chhatra League has already been banned. Common people became desperate to get rid of Chhatra League’s misdeeds. So, Chhatra League will never be able to hold meetings and or bring out processions anywhere in Bangladesh.” The IGP pointed out that attacks were launched on students and people during the mass uprising across the country. They were killed like that of animals. “Some of our colleagues were involved in those killings. They were joined by the main fascist forces — autocratic forces and the government which secured arms licenses.”

Md Moynul Islam said those who were supposed to receive arms licences, they didn’t get those. Those who received licences for legal arms, they used those arms unlawfully. “It is tragic and painful that those arms were used on our innocent people.” The IGP said the lists of the arms issued earlier have been prepared and the lists were handed over to the government. Rules and regulations of arms are going to be formulated anew so that none can use the legal arms of the government. “Thought illegal arms were used on people earlier, this time legal arms were used on them. So, we should be cautious about it.”

Moynul Islam said an unlawful phase had started in Bangladesh. Only Chhatra League will stay at universities, they will behave like hoodlums, they will occupy all the residential halls, they will get indulged in extortion and do all kinds of injustice. Then at one stage, they will appear at the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) test, join different cadres including police and work as the party cadres. They used to exercise unlimited power. Reforms of this practice have begun. “If these reforms cannot be carried on, we will not get good policemen and good servants in the country anymore.”

Earlier in the morning, the IGP offered fateha at Shaheed Abu Sayeed’s grave at Babonpur in Pirganj and met his family members. At that time, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement coordinator Sarjis Alam, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Mazid Ali, senior officials of the police administration of Rangpur district and Rangpur city were present.
