Highway blocked, vehicles torched; Over 50 factories in Gazipur declared holiday

Online Desk  :  Spreading a rumor following the death of one of their fellow, the workers have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, vandalising factory and setting fires several vehicles in Gazipur. According to Bashon Police Station OC Kaysar Ahmed, a woman, worked at a factory of Panorama Apparels Ltd at Bhogra Bypass area, ‘committed suicide’ by jumping from a seven-storey building approximately 3AM on Monday over family feud. Police recovered the body around 5AM and sent the body to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue.

The deceased was Afsana Akter Laboni, 30, from Mymensingh. Spreading a rumor that Laboni has died due to the negligence of the factory authorities, the workers of the factory made vandalism inside the factory at 8AM. They also blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. The angry workers torched several vehicles parked outside the factory. Getting information, police and army members went to the scene and chased the workers. From 10AM, vehicular movement on the highway became normal. Following the protest, more than 50 garment factories from Board Bazar to Gazipur intersection and on both sides of Gazipur Joydebpur Road and Gazipur Tangail Road were declared holiday for today.
