Online Desk: Authorities of Rajshahi University (RU) suspended all classes and examinations for the next two days following Saturday’s clash between the students and the locals. The announcement came after four hours of the clash when the university vice-chancellor Golam Sabbir Sattar came to the campus to meet the students. He requested the student to return back to their respected halls. The administration will take necessary steps.

A tense situation is prevailing in and around the campus on Sunday. Some small vehicles were seen moving on Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in front of the university. Seven platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed in the Binodpur area. RU administration will sit with law enforcement agencies today over the situation.

At least 250 people were injured during a clash between RU students and locals in Binodpur Gate area of Rajshahi city on Saturday. The clash ensued when a student of the university locked into altercation with a bus staff at about 6.00pm over sitting in a bus. At least 25 to 30 shops, including a police box, were torched during the clash.

Quoting witnesses, our RU correspondent said that Akash, a student of Social Work department, came to Rajshahi on a bus from Bogura in the evening. He locked into altercation with driver and supervisor of the bus over sitting in the bus. Helper of the bus and Akash locked into altercation again in Binodpur Gate area. A local trader also joined in the altercation at that time.

Being informed, students from various halls of the university rushed to the spot and engaged in clash with the bus staff and locals. Meanwhile, some agitating students of Fine Arts faculty blocked the Rajshahi-Dhaka rail line. Dhaka-bound Dhumketu Express did not leave Rajshahi station due to the blockade.
