Online Desk : The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in six divisions over the next 48 hours, warning of possible landslides in the hilly areas of Chattogram division and temporary waterlogging in parts of Chattogram city. In a heavy rainfall warning issued on Tuesday, the met office said active monsoon conditions could bring heavy rainfall of 44-88mm and very heavy rainfall exceeding 88mm at places in the divisions of Chattogram, Khulna, Barishal, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet from 3:00 pm on Tuesday.
The department warned that persistent heavy rain could trigger landslides in the hill districts of Chattogram division, while low-lying areas of Chattogram city may experience temporary waterlogging. Meanwhile, Chattogram continued to receive intense rainfall. Assistant meteorologist Biswajit Chowdhury of the Patenga Meteorological Office said 330.8mm of rainfall was recorded in Chattogram in the 24 hours between 9:00 am Monday and 9:00 am Tuesday.
Of the total, 60mm of rain fell within just three hours between 6:00am and 9:00am on Tuesday, he said. Biswajit said rainfall was likely to continue until Friday, raising the risk of further waterlogging in low-lying areas and landslides in the surrounding hills.
