Online Desk  :   Government primary school assistant teacher candidates who were finally selected and recommended for appointment began a sit-in programme at Shahbagh in the capital on Sunday, demanding that their appointments and postings be completed within August. The programme began at around 11:30am. The protesters announced that they would continue the demonstration until their demands are met. From the morning, the recommended assistant teacher candidates gathered in front of the Central Library of the University of Dhaka. At around 11:00am, they marched towards the Shahbagh intersection.

After being obstructed by police, the protesters took position on one side of the road. Police held repeated discussions with the demonstrators, but the teachers remained firm in continuing their programme. Meanwhile, police set up barricades at Shahbagh, and a water cannon was deployed nearby. A senior police officer on duty said that police could take action at any time if the protesters did not leave the area through negotiations.

Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education set October 1 as the joining date for candidates who were finally recommended for appointment as assistant teachers in government primary schools.
