Bangladesh proposes pipeline gas imports from Myanmar

Online Desk : Bangladesh has proposed importing natural gas from Myanmar through a cross-border pipeline as part of efforts to meet rising domestic energy demand and strengthen bilateral energy cooperation. Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood made the proposal during a meeting with Myanmar Ambassador to Bangladesh Kyaw Soe Moe at the Secretariat on Sunday. According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Bangladesh is giving priority to expanding energy cooperation with Myanmar under its “Neighbour First” policy.
During the meeting, the minister said Bangladesh remained keen to import natural gas from Myanmar through a pipeline to help address the country’s growing energy demand. The Myanmar ambassador welcomed the proposal and suggested exploring the possibility of supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) alongside pipeline gas. The minister responded positively to the suggestion. Iqbal Hassan Mahmood also proposed reviving earlier discussions on constructing a gas pipeline linking Myanmar and Chattogram.
To advance bilateral cooperation, the minister proposed a meeting between the energy ministers of the two countries and said he would formally invite his Myanmar counterpart to visit Bangladesh. He also expressed his willingness to visit Myanmar if necessary. Recalling Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to China, the minister said the proposed China-Myanmar-Bangladesh economic corridor could be complemented by a cross-border gas pipeline, which would also strengthen long-term trade and energy cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
Myanmar Ambassador Kyaw Soe Moe suggested that the Bangladesh-Myanmar Joint Technical Committee hold a meeting to examine the proposal and its technical feasibility. State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit, Energy Division Secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam and Power Division Secretary Mirana Mahrukh were also present at the meeting.
