Opposition leaders speaking Hasina’s language, says Mirza Fakhrul

Online Desk : BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said some opposition leaders had started using the same political language once used by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. He made the remarks at a discussion marking the second anniversary of the July Uprising at the National Press Club. The programme was organised jointly by the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ).
Mirza Fakhrul said the Awami League had declared after the 1991 election that it would not allow the government to function peacefully, adding that some current opposition leaders were now using similar rhetoric. “The current opposition leaders have started speaking in exactly the same language,” he said. Responding to criticism over the July Charter, Fakhrul said it was wrong to suggest that the BNP opposed its implementation.
He said the party had expressed its disagreement on issues where it differed with the National Consensus Commission but remained committed to implementing every part of the July Charter that it signed. Fakhrul said opposition parties had the democratic right to hold protests but urged them to avoid actions that could lead to conflict. He also called on the opposition to raise disagreements through parliamentary debate, saying discussions on reforms should take place in parliament.
“If democracy is to be institutionalised, the opposition has the biggest role to play. They should criticise the government, oppose its decisions and point out its mistakes. But if it is done within parliament, the democratic environment remains healthy,” he said.
