Mirza Fakhrul elected Bangladesh’s 23rd President

Online Desk : BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has offially been elected the country’s 23rd President. He secured 255 votes, while opposition Jamaat-led alliance contender Col (retd) Oli Ahmad got 88 votes in the Presidential election held on Thursday, August 20.
Chief Election Commissioner and also Election Returning Officer AMM Nasir Uddin announced the election results around 5:20 pm after the balloting. A total of 343 MPs out of the total 349, who are eligible to vote, exercised their franchise in the election. Soon after the announcement of the results, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman greeted Mirza Fakhrul with a flower and embraced him. The opposition leadership also congratulated him.
Earlier, around 2:10 pm, voting to elect the country’s 23rd President began at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban and ended at about 5:00 pm. Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmad cast the first vote, followed by Acting Speaker Kayser Kamal. Then, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Mirza Fakhrul cast their votes. Bangabhaban is preparing to hold the oath-taking ceremony for the newly elected President on Friday evening, August 21.
Under Article 70 of the Constitution, lawmakers, elected as candidates of political parties, will lose their seats if they vote for any candidate in this presidential election, going against their respective party’s decision.
