Biggest-ever seizure of yaba consignment, 3 get life-term jail

Online Desk: A court in Cox’s bazar has sentenced three persons to life imprisonment in a case filed by police for seizing as many as 17 lakh 75 thousand yaba pills and recovering Tk 1,70,68,500 in cash. At the same time, the court acquitted an accused of the case as he was the son of convicts. Each of the convicts was also fined Tk 5 lakh.

Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Ismail delivered the verdict early Thursday, said assistant public prosecutor Dilip Kumar Dhar. The convicts were Jahurul Islam Faruk, son of Md Nazrul Islam, Nuniarchar in Cox’s Bazar municipality; his father-in-law Abul Kalam, son of Abul Hossain, of the same area; and Nurul Amin Babu, son of Mozaffar Ahmed of the same area. Convict Abul Kalam’s son Sheikh Abdullah was acquitted.

APP Dilip Kumar Dhar told reporters that four persons were arrested with 14 lakh yaba pills from a local boat anchored at a canal adjacent to Khurushkul-Choufaldondi Bridge under Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila on February 9, 2021. According to their confession, police later seized Tk 1,70,68,500 in cash from Nuniarchhara house of Faruk. Besides, more 3,75,000 yaba pills were seized from Faruk’s uncle-in-law’s house. With those, a total of 17 lakh 75 thousands yaba pills were seized from the arrested persons.

The then Cox’s Bazar District Detective Branch’s OC Sheikh Mohammad Ali (now Ukhiya Police Station OC) filed the case being the plaintiff. DB police inspector Md Azharul Islam investigated the case. The chargesheet in the case was submitted on June 3 of that year. Accepting the chargesheet, the court started trial framing the chargesheet against the four accused who were in jail. The court concluded the trial of the case recording the depositions of 32 witnesses including the plaintiff and investigation officer of the case within two years. Later, the court set March 16 to deliver the case.
