Online Desk: At least 50 people were injured as Dhaka-bound Sonar Bangla Express train hit a freight train at Hasanpur Railway Station under Nangalkot upazila of Cumilla district on Sunday.
Sonar Bangla Express train hit the freight train from behind at 6.45pm caused its locomotive and seven carriages-four Sobhon class chair coaches and three AC coaches to derail.
Laksam Railway Police Station officer-in-Charge Jasim Uddin Chowdhury said some injured people were rescued from the spot and taken to the hospital. The number of injured may increase, he added.
Eyewitnesses said that the accident took place when Sonar Bangla Express train hit the freight train parked at Hasanpur Railway Station. Station master of Nangalkot Railway Station said that seven bogies of Sonar Bangla Express and freight trains were derailed.
About 50 passengers were injured in the accident, he said adding that the injured were taken to the local clinic and upazila health complex.
