Online Desk: Gazipur City Corporation’s (GCC) former mayor Jahangir Alam has said injustice has been done to him. “I will appeal against this decision. If necessary, I will go to Supreme Court and High Court,” says Jahangir on Sunday after cancellation of his nomination paper. Earlier, Faridul Islam, returning officer of the GCC election, cancelled the nomination saying that Jahangir is a loan defaulter. However, the nomination of his mother Zaida Khatun was declared valid at the same time.
Terming the returning officer’s decision as biased, Jahangir said, “Injustice has been done to me. It is biased (scrutinizing). The bank authorities have given written and oral statements about the payment of installments of the loan. Still, what you have done is biased.” He further said, “I want justice. I will appeal against this decision. If necessary, I will go to Supreme Court, High Court. I will fight to the end.” “I want to know from the countrymen whether I will get justice as a candidate, as a human being.”
Returning officer Faridul Islam announced the cancellation of nomination papers of three candidates, including Jahangir Alam, during scrutinizing. Nomination papers of nine out of the 12 mayoral candidates, including Awami League-backed Advocate Azmat Ullah Khan, were declared valid.
The former Gazipur mayor Jahangir Alam was the guarantor of an industrial organization. Jahangir was declared a loan defaulter along with the organization, the returning officer said. According to the district election office, the total number of registered voters in the 57-ward Gazipur City Corporation is 11,843,363. The voters will choose their next mayor through electronic voting machines (EVMs) on May 25.
