Online Desk: She went out from her house to go to Narayanganj but faced a tragic moment to struggle. The journey was not as usual like others. The launch she board on to travel, suddenly fell in the Meghna River from this vehicle and struggle nine hours to swim ashore to survive. Finally, she was rescued by the fishermen from the bank of the river. But it came to another tragic end when victim Zohra Begum, 38, died on Monday.
She died in the morning while receiving treatment at National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedlc Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka.
Deceased Zohra Begum was wife of Johirul Islam, a resident of Pashchim Bishkatali village in the upazila.
On May 3, the victim fell into the river in Tandar Bazar area around 10:30 pm while going to Dhaka from Shariatpur’s Gosairhaat upazila. Zohra used to live in Narayanganj with her husband and children. She went to visit her house on the occasion of Eid.
At 9.30pm on May 3, the victim board on Eagle-3 launch from Maijara Ghat to reach Dhaka. She fell in the Meghna River in Tandar Bazar area accidentally from the first floor of the launch at about 10.30pm. The launch was stopped there and searched for the victim with the searchlight of the launch but failed to rescue the victim. Later, the victim’s husband and son got down from the launch and board on fishing boat to continue the search.
At 7.30am on May 4, some fishermen spotted the victim on the bank of the river and rescued her. She was then admitted to NITOR. Left leg of the woman was broken after the incident and she underwent surgery on that night. The victim’s brother-in-law Maidul Islam Mridha confirmed the death news. Doctors said the victim was traumatized by staying in the river overnight. The leg injury was serious and she had bleeding for this reason.
