Online Desk: The government has given its approval to form a dedicated Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) police unit to ensure the overall security of metro rail. The approval came after five months of the inauguration of the metro rail service. The MRT police unit will lead by a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and will consist of 231 personnel responsible for overseeing the safe operation and management of the metro rail.
The Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a gazette notification signed by its Deputy Secretary Noor-E-Mahabuba Joya in this regard. According to the notification, the unit will comprise three cadre posts and 228 non-cadre posts. Additionally, the Table of Organization and Equipment includes a provision for 15 vehicles to support the MRT police in their duties.
The administrative posts are — one DIG, one superintendent of police, two inspectors, one inspector (Unarmed), one inspector (Armed), two unarmed sub-inspectors (SIs), two armed SIs, three unarmed assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs), four armed ASIs, five naiks, 10 constables, one computer operator, one accountant, one senior assistant and two office assistants/computer numismatists.
Posts for MRT Line-6 will be one additional superintendent of police, six inspectors (Unarmed), two SIs (Unarmed), 34 ASIs (Unarmed) and 153 constables. Before and after the inauguration, until the formation of the MRT Police, the Metro Rail was running under the security of the Police Reserve Force and Thana Police. The country’s first metro rail was inaugurated on December 28, 2022.
